Incoming Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez confirmed on June 23 that President-elect Ferdinand 'Bongbong Marcos picked former Philippine Airlines president Jaime Bautista as the new chief of the Department of Transportation. Bautista is set to replace outgoing secretary Arthur Tugade from his post on June 30.
The incoming DOTr secretary served as the president of the country's flag carrier Philippine Airlines for 13 years and retired in 2019. Overall, he has spent 26 years in the company in various executive positions.
As the head of DOTr, Bautista will be overseeing and expecting to create solutions to the public transportation crisis and long-term issues the country has been experiencing. Pressing concerns such as the public utility vehicle modernization program, traffic, major oil-price hike, lack of public vehicles and other commuter related issues are expected to be given priority.
Aside from Jaime Bautista, three other Department of Transportation officials were named. Former DOTr undersecretary Cesar Chavez, lawyer Cheloy Garafil and Christopher Pastrana were appointed Chavez was named undersecretary for railways, Garafil will be the head of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board while Pastrama will serve as the general manager of the Philippine Ports Authority.
