PBBM's participation in the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits considered a "success"
By Norman Adriano 14 Nov 2022 602

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. together with the Philippine delegation arrived in the country on November 14, Monday after a successful participation in the recently concluded  40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits held in the Kingdom of Cambodia.

PBBM attended the Summit in capital Phnom Penh from November 10 to 13.

“I’m pleased to report that my visit to Cambodia for the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summit was successful. In all these meetings, I articulated our national interest and our commitment to work with ASEAN, our dialogue partners, to find common ground, address the issues affecting our region and strengthen cooperation,” PBBM said in his arrival speech.

The Philippine representative engaged in bilateral talks with the other presidents and heads of states from different countries to strengthen the relations, build cooperation  and find common grounds to be able to find solutions to various issues and concerns  we are all facing. In the summit, the state heads also tackled the community-building efforts for the SEA nations, regional concerns such as the coup d'état in Myanmar, conflicts in the South China Sea  (West Philippine Sea), and the Russia-Ukraine war.

"I think it was quite gratifying to see that there was a very large area of consensus amongst the ASEAN Member States. At ganoon pare-pareho kasi sa atin, ‘yung food supply, presyo ng fertilizer, presyo ng langis, iyon ang inaalala supply-side problems. Parehong-pareho sa atin. Atsaka bukod pa doon ay mayroong, nagkakaunawaan lahat ng Member States na hindi kaya ng mag-isa. Kailangan magsama-sama, kailangan magtulungan. And so that is I think the most important takeaway from this trip for the ASEAN Summit," PBBM said.

During the summit, PBBM also took initiative to create stronger connection and communication with the ASEAMN dialogue partners like the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

“We reviewed the progress of our relations so far, in the initiatives and projects under ASEAN-led mechanisms. There was an exploration of possible new areas of cooperation with our dialogue partners. We exchanged views on regional and international issues,” he said.

Before leaving Cambodia, PBBM  had a short meeting with the Filipino community thanking them for their valuable contributions for the country.

“I was honored to meet them, and I thanked them for their efforts and contribution to our nation’s progress and development, as well as that of Cambodia because they have been lauded by even Prime Minister Hun Sen as part of the reconstruction of Cambodia. The Filipinos played a very large part”.
