Why the 2025 Election is Crucial
By John Paniel Tuazon 04 Feb 2025 245

Every election is crucial. Campaign paraphernalia, commercials aimed at persuading audiences, and speeches centered around visions and proposals on different societal issues—these are just some of the elements that make the 2025 National Election significant and worth watching.

With 18,280 seats open, many aspirants are seizing the chance to lead and serve the Filipino people. However, surprisingly expected, well-known political family names are still vying for various positions. This has sparked discussions about what these same figures will do with the same issues that have remained unresolved by past officials. Will they bring something fresh and effective? Or are they simply stagnant, continuing down the same path?

President Bongbong Marcos (PBBM)'s term has had its ups and downs. The rift with Vice President Sara Duterte, for example, has revealed a lack of unity within the government—contrary to their famous "UniTeam" slogan during the 2022 election. Alongside this issue, there are widely known unresolved problems such as the West Philippine Sea dispute, POGOs, the economy, leadership issues, and other concerns that have not been adequately addressed. How will these factors influence voting behavior and the power of Filipino voters in 2025?

According to a recent Oculum Research and Analytics survey on the 2025 Senate race, brothers Erwin and Ben Tulfo, who are part of the Tulfo political dynasty (including sitting Senator Raffy Tulfo), occupy the first and third spots. In second, fourth through eighth place are returning senators Tito Sotto, Bong Revilla, Pia Cayetano, Manny Pacquiao, Bong Go, and Bato Dela Rosa. The ninth and eleventh spots are claimed by the Binay and Villar families, with Abby Binay and Camille Villar. Former presidential candidate Panfilo Lacson secured the tenth spot, while TV personality Willie Revillame claimed the twelfth. President Marcos's sister, Imee Marcos, placed thirteenth despite reportedly spending one billion pesos on advertisements before the official campaign season.

On the other hand, opposition senatorial candidates led by former Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino did not secure a seat in the recent poll. However, in university and college student polls, many members of Gen Z seem to favor them. For example, a poll at Tarlac State University (TSU) showed Pangilinan in first place, Aquino in second, followed by former Senator Leila De Lima in third. De Lima, however, is only running for a congressional seat representing the Liberal Party. Other notable opposition figures include Luke Espiritu, France Castro of the Makabayan Bloc, and Ke Leody de Guzman of PLM.

The recent public surveys show that Filipino voters are still largely drawn to familiar family names, electing the same people they have in past elections. However, university polls indicate a preference for the opposition and government critics. This shows a distinct divide in voter preferences, with a clear gap between the two groups.

Given the ongoing rift between the Marcos and Duterte families, which hold significant influence in the political landscape today, will Filipino voters continue to support these families and their political groups? Or will they turn to opposition senatorial candidates to fill the seats in 2025?

The 2025 election is CRUCIAL. It will shape the coming years, potentially altering the political landscape and government policies. It will influence the Philippines' economic state and its stance on various issues. Most importantly, it will determine the future of today’s generation and the generations to come. This election has the potential to bring about change—whether visible or not. Every election is crucial, and we hope that the 2025 election marks the beginning of a new chapter in Philippine politics.
