Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos’ leading the 2022 election polls have gathered various reactions from supporters and rival supporters alike. The presumptive win of the Marcos camp is surrounded by disputable opinions followed by questions of how come the Commission on Elections gathered this much votes in just a day or two.
On election day, Filipinos used social media to report multiple cases of election violations, inefficient voting processes, and malfunctioning of vote counting machines. All of which, the COMELEC failed to address properly.
The initial, partial, and unofficial win of Marcos Jr. indicated the return of the dictator’s family in power. This sparked the fire to numerous student organisations from different universities in the Philippines.
The University of the Philippines (UP) office of the student regent posted to social media:
“Tapat tayong lumahok sa eleksyon. Ngunit, pandaraya at paglabag sa batas ang sagot ng administrasyon. Hindi tayo papayag na pamunuan tayo ng mga magnanakaw at mamamatay-tao.
COMELEC ACCOUNTABILITY, NO CLASSES UNDER A MARCOS PRESIDENCY. UP STUDENTS, WALK OUT!”
Far Eastern University (FEU) follows suit to UP the next day. The FEU student organisation posted in their Facebook account:
“NO CLASSES UNDER A MARCOS PRESIDENCY!
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Konseho ng mga Mag-aaral initiated a petition calling for suspension of classes as protest against Marcos Jr’s unofficial winning of the election. They took to social media and marched to COMELEC.
“The impending return of the Marcoses to power after being ousted by the people is a huge attack to the soul of our democracy and the people's democratic interest. "Bong Bong" Marcos' Presidential bid is backed by lies, twisting of historical narrative, and corruption. His very presence as a candidate has always been an offense to the sanctity of the elections.
The Marcos-Duterte tandem is a scheme of two families trying their best to keep a hold of their power. We must resist. Our future is on the line! We must take the fight to the streets and with the people!”
The stand of these student organisations against the possible Marcos administration may ignite the probability of EDSA 4. The people power revolution, also known as the EDSA revolution was a series of popular demonstrations in the Philippines mostly in Metro Manila. It was a sustained campaign of civil resistance against regime violence and electoral fraud. EDSA 1 was the first of the series, it was to end the dictatorship of the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr, father of Bongbong, the leading presidential candidate in today’s 2022 election.
