Work From Home Vs. On-Site Work
By John Phillip Billones 14 Aug 2024 591

Almost every company was obliged to require their employees to work from home due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. Working from home allowed every individual to spend more time with themselves, a majority of the population expressed satisfaction with the arrangement while a few employees favored working on-site since it facilitated communication among them.

But which of the two is better for the employees? In this article, I’ll be tackling the pros and cons of working from home and working on-site.

Work from home is a working environment setup where employees are free to do their work or deliverables from the comfort of their home without having to report to their place of work. Due to the advancement of technology, working from home has become easier, and almost all technology gadgets that employees consume at the workplace include work phones, their regular working computers, and even internet connectivity.

While working on-site means executing all or some part of the job from a place of business or workplace. In this working setup, an employee is expected to perform tasks within the company’s premises, thus enjoying direct contact with fellow employees and being free to fully exploit the facilities within the organization.

Below are some of the distinctions found between the two working options:

SCHEDULING

The matter of time is organized differently between these two. In a work from home setup, you have a flexible schedule, or you have spare time for yourself, or you can do other things. In on-site working, you have to make sure that you always get to your workplace on time, yet there are employees who prefer working this way because they are more comfortable around their workplace.

COMMUTE

In a work-from-home environment, you do not have to travel to your workplace and thus save on transportation costs and time that could be used for so many other activities. If you are on-site, a lot of your hours are consumed by commuting during traffic jams, especially in the evening.

FOCUS
When it comes to employment, there are some employees who want to work on-site, where there are fewer disturbances and they can easily concentrate on their tasks. With working from home, there are many interferences, which include noise from outside or inside their home.

SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

As implied, when working on-site, one can easily interact with other employees, spend time with them, and even become close friends with their colleagues. Contrary to when you’re working from home, distance work may limit your interactions with your coworkers, and it is not easy to build relationships as colleagues.

PHYSICAL HEALTH

In a work-from-home environment, there are more opportunities to make sure you get to take care of your health and you have more extra time. Unlike on-site employees, who have to leave very early in the morning just to get to their workplace, sometimes they cannot even remember to eat at all just to be among the first to report to their on-site work.

Most employees want to work remotely rather than on company premises because it is convenient for them and they can work on other things at home. But on the other hand, there are still those individuals who want to work on-site, especially the newcomers in the field and the ones who are still looking for a job, because they must gain experience and be introduced to the environment of the desired industry to be able to develop professionally.
