Will the next president be able to pull the country out of its gloom?
By James 11 May 2022 566

As the election results approach, many people are concerned about what will happen once the presidential winner is declared. Regardless of who wins, the country will be affected for the next six years and beyond. We have been living in the dark under an authoritarian regime that has failed to confront poverty, drugs, corruption, violence, and change, as well as the epidemic and the resulting economic disaster. Will the next president be able to bring the country out of its gloom? Since the future is unpredictable, it is better to come up and imagine possible scenarios.

Millions of Filipinos went to the polls on Monday, propelling the namesake and son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos to an early lead in his effort to restore his family's political dominance in the country.

The elections turned out to be honest, fair, and credible. The losing candidates yield, but Marcos Jr. does not receive complete support and respect because there is a widespread perception that his triumph was won through deception and falsehoods supported by his family's ill-gotten fortune.

While uniting the traditional corrupt political elite, Marcos Jr. is unable to unite the nation behind him. Lacking leadership experience and competence, he is incapable of addressing the pandemic, economic, and ecological crises effectively.  Being content with the honor and glory of being the president, he remains carefree and lazy and continues to practice an absentee and laissez-faire style of leadership. He depends on others to do the hard and dirty work and relies on the advice of his wife Liza, thus earning the title of conjugal rule. He is unable to do away with corruption in government. He does not have the trust, confidence, and respect of many Filipinos. He is unable to go to the US for fear of being arrested.

At this point frustration all over the social media platforms. Imagine guilty of tax evasion, unapologetic of past family crimes, fake credentials, corruption issues, no show on debates and yet 30 million people voted for him over someone with a clean track record. If now is not the time to give up on this country, I do not know when it is. “Bakit ang hirap mo mahalin Pilipinas” this country is really going to elect an actor who said he will hire lawyers to make laws for the senate, instead of voting for an actual lawyer. You know something is seriously wrong with this country and its people. Philippines, you’re sick.
