When we think about online dating, Bumble, Tinder, and Facebook are probably the first platforms that come to mind. But what if I told you there’s another place where people are looking for dates, friendships, connections, and sometimes even something more?

That place is Reddit.

If you’re wondering, “What is Reddit?” it’s a discussion platform made up of thousands of communities where people talk about almost anything you can imagine, including relationships and dating.

Nowadays, I’ve noticed that meeting and interacting with people romantically can be surprisingly difficult. Many people turn to social media or dating apps to find someone they might already have some connection with, whether they’re a schoolmate, batchmate, mutual friend, or simply someone nearby.

I never really considered Reddit as a place for dating. In fact, I wasn’t particularly confident about using dating apps myself. Then, one day, while looking at a friend’s phone, I noticed the usual Bumble and Tinder apps. But there was something else sitting alongside them: Reddit.

Curious, I asked about it.

That was when I discovered Reddit’s dating communities.

One of the communities I came across was PHR4Dating, also known as PHR4R. The “R4R” stands for “Redditor for Redditor,” where users post looking for people they might connect with, whether that means a date, a relationship, friendship, or simply someone to talk to.

As someone who had recently become single, I decided to check it out.

What I found was surprisingly different from what I expected. There were people in their early 20s to early 30s looking for someone to bond with, date, or potentially build a relationship with. And if things didn’t work out romantically, some were simply open to making a new friend.

At that point, I started thinking: Is Reddit basically a dating app without actually being a dating app?

Because, in a way, it works.

A typical PHR4Dating post might look something like this:

• The kind of person you’re looking for
• Your interests and preferences
• What you’re hoping to find

Instead of simply swiping right based on a photo, you can actually read what someone has to say about themselves.

And that is what I found most interesting about Reddit.

Unlike many traditional dating apps, where photos and short profiles can make up most of your first impression, Reddit allows you to encounter someone's personality through their words first.

You get to see how they express themselves, what they’re interested in, what they’re looking for, and sometimes even what they value in a relationship. Before you even message someone, you can already get a sense of whether you might actually vibe with them.

There’s something refreshing about that.

After seeing countless profiles and constantly swiping through photos on dating apps, reading someone's thoughts and personality through a post feels different. You’re not necessarily judging whether someone is attractive within the first few seconds. Instead, you’re asking yourself, “Do I actually like the person behind these words?”

Of course, Reddit isn’t some magical alternative to dating apps.

Would I recommend Reddit if you’re looking for love, a date, friendship, or something casual?

Maybe.

But I would also tell you to approach it with a grain of salt.

Just like any dating platform, Reddit has people with different intentions. Some are genuinely looking for meaningful connections, while others may not have the best intentions. You don't really know who is behind the screen until you take the time to get to know them, so being careful, setting boundaries, and protecting yourself should always come first.

For me, though, discovering Reddit’s dating communities gave me a different perspective on how people look for relationships.

We all have our own idea of what makes someone a good partner. Some people care about personality. Others look for shared interests, humor, values, or simply someone they can talk to comfortably. Reading these posts made me realize just how specific and personal those preferences can be.

And maybe that’s what makes Reddit interesting.

It isn’t necessarily about finding the “perfect” person. It’s about finding someone who might be the right fit for you—and recognizing that you also have to be the right fit for them.

So, if you’re thinking about trying Reddit for your next dating adventure, go ahead and explore. Just remember that behind every username is a real person, and behind every connection is the possibility that things may or may not work out.

Be kind. Be honest. Be respectful. Keep your expectations realistic.

And if it doesn’t work out?

Sometimes, two people simply aren’t meant to connect that way.

And that’s okay, too.
