According to a report from CNN, Palace officials are nearly done reviewing the controversial anti-terrorism bill with only a week before it lapses into law.

The Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs submitted a recommendation to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, who will then send it to the President, Malacañang said Thursday.

Ibig sabihin po, meron na pong memorandum na recommending a course of action to the President. Subject to final approval lang po 'yan siguro ni Executive Secretary at dadalhin na po sa lamesa ni Presidente,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an online media briefing.

The Bill has until July 9 to sign or veto by President Rodrigo Duterte before it automatically becomes a law.

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, Jr. told that the President has not expressed objections to the provisions of the bill, which has gained local and international criticism in an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet has called on President Rodrigo Duterte to “refrain” from signing the controversial anti-terrorism bill, for it could have a “chilling effect on human rights.”

“So I would urge the President to refrain from signing the law and to initiate the broad-based consultation process to draft legislation that can effectively prevent and counter violent extremism, but which contains some safeguards to prevent this misuse against people engaged in peaceful criticism and advocacy,” the UN human rights chief said.

Days before the final judgment, netizens are still on the race to halt the passing of the ‘doom’ bill into law that will tear freedom of expression in the country. The move is being condemned due to its priority and urgent status amid the on-going pandemic crisis.
