Jeepney drivers are among the 7.3 million Filipinos who became jobless amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With this problem, as seen as a difficult situation for all the daily wage earners especially for public utility jeepney drivers, Lalamove launches a one-of-a-kind vehicle to cater to the delivery needs of the QC residents, the LalaJeep, in partnership with Quezon City local government.
The project’s goal is to help jeepney drivers who were displaced from work due to community quarantine. This initiative will serve as an alternative source of income while we all gradually adapting to the new normal.
Lalajeep will be available on the Lalamove application from June 15 to August 15 to serve Quezon City peeps.
The jeepneys can pick-up and deliver up to 600-kilogram items, which is a whole lot more than the motorcycle option. The size limit is at 7 x 4 x 3.5 feet (length x width x height).
LalaJeep's base fare starts at P200 with additional P25 for every kilometer.
Dannah Majarocon, the Managing Director of Lalamove Philippines said that “This project is aligned with Lalamove’s goal to empower communities and uplift the livelihood of those who are heavily affected by the pandemic. This will allow our services better to suit every business owner and day-to-day user’s delivery needs. This project is a testament that with governmental support, we can deliver possibilities faster.”
Also, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte shared her excitement about the new endeavor in the city.
"Since our jeepney drivers are directly affected by the continuing community quarantine, this LalaJeep program is a welcome initiative that will provide alternative livelihood for them. We are grateful to Lalamove for piloting this program in Quezon City," Belmonte said in a press release.
The city has facilitated the training sessions of 200 jeepney drivers who will be participating in the Lalajeep project.
This will be an affordable option for business owners who are heavily reliant on the delivery app with the bulk of orders and bigger size items.
