Fans of Britney Spears have been using the hashtag #FreeBritney to demand that the singer is given control over her career and personal affairs for a couple of years of her career.
Recently, the hashtag is once again has been becoming a trend on the social media after the release of her documentary called “Framing Britney Spears”, that unfolds story about her life and the “vice-like grip of her father.”
Spears, 38, remains under a “legal conservatorship” which renders the singer unable to make independent decisions concerning her personal life and career. A conservatorship is granted when a person is deemed unable to make their own decisions, typically because of mental incapacity. This is following an alleged “breakdown” in 2007, when the musician has been under her father Jamie’s guardianship since 2008.
Despite numerous comebacks, however, Britney's longtime fans have amplified their disappointment and dissatisfaction as they to be seeing the pop star continue to be under a conservatorship at 38 years old. Wholeheartedly convinced that the singer herself also wants to be free from the legal binding, fans launched the #FreeBritney movement, utilizing social media to bring awareness to the discrepancies surrounding the conservatorship.
For the past 12 years, Spears’s father, together with an attorney named Andrew Wallet, have taken over the singer’s assets. The agreement also includes being able to restrict Spears’s visitors, communicate with doctors about her treatment, and manage her $60 million net worth.
A website called FreeBritney.net, launched in 2009 by fans, posted a statement on why they believe Britney does not need a conservatorship this far into her life and career.
"During the twelve years of Spears' conservatorship she has repeatedly toured the world, released multiple albums, and worked on a variety of television shows," the site stressed out. "Her conservators decide whether or not she works, as she cannot enter into contracts for herself because she is legally not her own person. Britney Spears needs permission from her conservators to leave her house or spend any of her own money."
The movement also made fans to have gone out to the streets to protest on Britney's behalf, demanding an end to her conservatorship.
