Microsoft's Internet Explorer bids goodbye after 27 years of service
By Norman Son Adriano 15 Jun 2022 734

Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the web browser that dominated the world before, now comes to an end today after years of service since its launch in 1995. Internet Explorer was a part of the add-on bundle package Plus! on Windows 95.

Microsoft already announced last May of 2021 that Internet Explorer will be retiring and officially shutting down today, June 15, 2022.

"Internet Explorer 11 desktop applications will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10," Microsoft said in a post.

This end of an era for the Internet Explorer will pave the way for the Microsoft Edge which was launched in 2015 as a replacement. This change aims to strengthen the brand to compete with the  popular and in-demand search engines of today. The company believes that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 lies within the Microsoft Edge.

"Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications," according to Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager.

Although Internet Explorer shuts down today, Microsoft clarified that Internet Explorer-based websites and applications will still work with Microsoft Edge until the year 2029.

As Internet Explorer or IE bids its farewell, it brings a lot of nostalgic memories to a lot of users. Being one of the first search engines, IE helped millions of students and  employees from the late 90's to early 2000's around the globe.
