Is December the perfect month to file your resignation?
By Norman Son Adriano 19 Dec 2022 853

Have you ever thought of leaving your current job? Well, once in a while, coming across with resigning is a pretty normal thing for people in the corporate world. Several factors are taken into consideration why employee *like you* decides to forego  the beauty (or maybe not) of the work you are currently doing. And most of the time, when we deliver this news to our loved ones or close friends, we usually hear the common comment and suggestion that we do it in the last month of the year, December.

According to Philippine Labor Law, resignation is the voluntary act of an employee who is in a situation where one believes that personal reasons cannot be sacrificed in favor of the exigency of the service and one has no other choice but to dissociate oneself from employment.

Resigning, which simply means dissociating oneself from employment, is one of the challenging parts of becoming an adult (cries). There are a lot of takes on this matter. For some people, filing the resignation paper is an act of freeing oneself from being a 'corporate slave' and of moving forward towards the passion they have been aspiring to for the longest time. Others do it to take a break from reality—to breathe. Some, plainly, just want to do it for unknown personal reasons.

From all the few reasons listed, have you ever wondered why the month of December has the highest rate of resignations filed?

Below are the top 3 reasons why:

  1. Bonuses (wink) - According to a report, companies around the world typically release bonuses in December. Various types of bonuses are distributed to employees during this period. Some of the most common bonuses are 13th Month Pay, which is a mandatory monetary benefit of the company; the Christmas Bonus, which is an incentive given to employees; and the Performance-Based Bonus, which by itself means that if you perform well, you are qualified to receive one. With this in mind, resigning during this period is the ideal or perfect time to do so. Like they say, "Timing is everything." So employees usually wait to receive their bonuses first before bidding farewell.

  1. Ending a Chapter - As the last and final month of the year, December is the best time to rest and take a break. Throughout the year, an employee's job is to perform, complete tasks, create reports, attend meetings, create agendas, and so on. Work, work, work! That has been our mantra from the beginning to the end of the year. Filing a resignation during this time creates a sense of accomplishment and closure for a routine you have been doing for a long period of time.

  1. To Start Anew - There will be moments in our  adult or I should say *corpo life*  that will really hit us about the job we have. Some question if they are truly happy, some want a shift in career; and there are some who want to have a new environment, maybe with the people, company, or workplace in general. Starting a new adventure might be challenging, but it is a rewarding and fulfilling experience for those who are one hundred percent sure of their decisions.

There is nothing wrong with resigning. DO IT IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT, IF YOU THINK IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY AND HEALTHY! Just keep in mind that you should prepare financially and have backup plans (from plan A to Z) once you file one.

Keep on grinding, everyone, until we reach the stability, purpose, and contentment we are aspiring for and looking for.
