About 90 individuals including land beneficiaries in Hacienda Tinang were arrested by local police on June 9 in Concepcion, Tarlac. Farmers and peasant advocates were conducting a cultivation activity when the 20 policemen and regional mobile group patrol came over.
In a report posted on Rural Women Advocates' Facebook Page, they condemn the violence acted by the armed men upon the farmers.
"Earlier today, volunteers joined members of the Malayang Kilusang Samahang Magsasaka ng Tinang (MAKISAMA - Tinang) in Hacienda Tinang for a bungkalan, wherein peasants assert their right to self-determinism through the collective act of tilling idle land. At around 10:30am, 20 armed policemen from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 3 arrived. They subjected participants of the bungkalan to verbal threats, physical harassment, arrest, and the illegal confiscation of IDs, phones, and other belongings," they said.
"Farmers of MAKISAMA - Tinang are the rightful agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) to the 200-hectare agricultural land in Tinang, having been awarded their Certificate of Land Ownership Awards (CLOAS) in 1995 under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP)." they added.
Members of Malayang Kilusang Samahang Magsasaka ng Tinang (MAKISAMA - Tinang) were arrested, among them are Ophelia Cunanan, Felino Cunanan Jr, and Alvin Dimarucot who are currently detained at the police station. They were accused of obstruction of justice.
