One of Baguio City's newest man-made tourist attractions, Igorot Stone Kingdom located along Long-long Road in Pinsao Proper which was opened in 2021 was ordered to shut down due safety issues and failure to comply with necessary requirements.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong ordered the closure of the 6,000-square meter park on Tuesday, November 8. Magalong stated that it has been operating without a business permit. Moreover, he emphasized that the stone structures inside the tourist spot were not covered by a building permit which puts its structural integrity in question.
Mayor Magalong said that the owner had been notified to comply with the requirements but instead, the Igorot Stone Kingdom's management continued to build and create more structures. This results in filing a criminal case for violating the National Building Code from the City Buildings and Architecture Office.
“We have to be proactive. We can’t wait of something bad to happen before we act,” Mayor Magalong said.
In a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) conducted by the Asian Development Bank and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), they have assessed that the structures of Igorot Stone Kingdom have “very high landslide exposure.” The Department Of Environment and Natural Resources on the other hand considered the park as "prone to erosion"
On November 9, Pio Velasco, owner of the Igorot Stone Kingdom faced the media stating that he accepts the government's decision to shut down his business.
