Patrick Quinn, a co-founder of the social media ALS ice bucket challenge, which has raised more than $200 million worldwide for Lou Gehrig’s disease research, died yesterday, November 23 at the age of 37, according to the ALS Association’s Facebook post.
“We are deeply sorry to share that Pat Quinn passed away today. Pat was co-founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and an inspiration to millions of people around the world.” The association said on their statement. "Pat fought ALS with positivity and bravery and inspired all around him."
Quinn was diagnosed in March of 2013 according to ALS Association, a month after his 30th birthday. Immediately after he was diagnosed, he decided he wanted to make a difference for the ALS community. Taking a nod from his friend, Pete Frates, who also died because of ALS in December last year, Patrick established his own team of supporters called “Quinn for the Win”, to raise awareness and funds for the fight against ALS.
The Ice Bucket Challenge, also called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, was an activity or challenge made viral on the social media way back 2014 which involves dumping of a bucket of ice water over a person's head, , to promote awareness of the disease “amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)” and encourage donations for research.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was able to garner $115 million for The ALS Association and over $220 million from around the world for ALS research. It thoroughly hastened the fight against ALS, leading to new research discoveries, and expanded care and awareness for people living with ALS all over the world.
Different prominent personalities had joined the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, including Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Steven Spielberg, Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, Lebron James, Lady Gaga, among others.
“Time is a funny thing. Everything can change in an instant, or nothing can change for decades. You never know what life will yield. It’s important to take every moment and live in a way that moves you, moves others. Make your time here purposeful and authentic.” Patrick said in his speech at the 5th anniversary of the Ice Bucket Challenge in Boston.
