When’s the Mañanita? Debold Sinas is the new PNP Chief
By Jhoemz Vercide 09 Nov 2020 913

Yup, it looks like fortune favors the ‘mañanita’ cop again!

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Debold Sinas has appointed as the new head of PNP by President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, November 9, 2020.

Sinas is the 5th police chief under Duterte administration and his appointment will take effect Tuesday, Nov. 10, said Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

“Tinalaga po ni President Rodrigo Duterte si Debold Sinas bilang bagong Philippine National Police chief effective po bukas, November 10,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque announced in an online briefing.

In May, the controversial general has drawn flak and received public ire over a mañanita or pre-dawn birthday serenade at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City with his subordinates.

The surprise party evidently has shown violations with regard to quarantine rules on physical distancing and mass gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and even while Luzon was under strict lockdown.

Despite public outrage, Duterte had refused to sack Sinas and still handed him his trust.

"Presidential appointments are really very executive in character. It is a prerogative of the President. And he need not make any explanation for his appointment," Roque said when asked about Duterte's selection process.

Sinas in July also made headlines over his viral confrontation with the family of a retired officer that he and his men asked to leave from a government compound in Taguig City.

Sinas, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Hinirang Class of 1987, succeeds General Camilo Cascolan who will reach the mandatory retirement age of 56 for uniformed personnel, is retiring on Tuesday.

"Nonetheless, tiningnan siyempre ni Presidente 'yung track record ng kan'yang appointee. At matagal nang sinasabi ni Presidente na talagang si bagong PNP chief Sinas ay napakalaki ng naitulong sa kaniyang war on drugs," Roque said.

What’s your reaction to Sinas’ appointment?
