Have you ever been in love with your best friend and end up being regretful for not confessing your feelings just to save your friendship? Ben&Ben’s new song “Lifetime” will surely hit you right in the feels.
On June 4, the award-winning OPM band released a heartbreaking song based on a fan’s story left in the comment section on the music video for the band’s song, “Pagtingin”. A username “Anne jou” shared her story of regretting not being able to express her feelings to her high school best friend because she was afraid to lose their friendship– and attended his wedding to another woman 8 years later.
“Before his wedding, he thanked me for being his best friend and told me that before he met the girl he got married to, he loved me first. For 5 years. But he was also scared of losing me so he just decided to keep it,” she wrote.
“I was shocked and I slightly had anger towards the world. We didn’t know that if only one of us dared to make a move, a lifetime was waiting for us,” she said. “So people, while you can, please express how you really feel so that in the end you won’t regret anything.”
The band has noticed the comment and shared a screenshot on their twitter on May 11 with the caption “damn.” The story kept themselves up all night on the following day, May 12, and decided to write a song about it.

In a zoom conference on June 1, the band admitted that writing and recording from their homes challenged their usual process in more ways than one.
They had to do DIY set-ups and odd hacks to finish the song as quarantine made them work separately using the only instruments they have at home.
The nine-piece collective band sought help from veteran sound engineer JP Verona and Grammy Award-winning Leon Zervos who has worked with artists like Pink, Rihanna, Maroon 5, and more.
According to the band, “Lifetime” is an emotionally affecting song that leaves us wondering what could have happened if we only mustered the courage to admit our feelings to the person we were pining for, regardless of the outcome.
We all should watch out for Ben & Ben’s live performance of this new single online.
They say music can inspire, transform, and heal us in many ways but on some occasions, the way we feel about the song can impact the artist. May real or not, we have to thank “Anne jou” for inspiring the band to write a song we surely can’t stop listening to.
