Umbrella Academy actor Elliot Page comes out as transgender
By AJ Virtuz 02 Dec 2020 620

Elliot Page, actor and star of Juno, X-Men, Inception, and The Umbrella Academy, revealed public that he is a transgender as he announced on social media on Tuesday, December 1.

In a note posted both on his Instagram and Twitter accounts, Page said that he goes by the pronouns "he" and "they" and he was publicly changing his name to Elliot.

"I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life." Page wrote in his post.

According to GLAAD, an American non-governmental media monitoring organization for LGBTQ people — Page is both nonbinary and transgender, meaning that their gender identity is neither man nor woman.

"My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared. 'm scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the "jokes" and of violence,” he wrote in their statement.

Page’s coming out statement also addressed the inequality, discrimination and injustice for the trans people in general. “To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture. The statistics are staggering. The discrimination towards trans people is rife, insidious, and cruel, resulting in horrific consequences. In 2020 alone it has been reported that at least 40 transgender people have been murdered, the majority of which were Black and Latinx trans women."

American Pop star Miley Cyrus, X-Men co-star Anna Paquin, Orange is the New Black star Ruby Rose, actors Rooney Mara, Julianne Moore, America Ferrera and Mark Ruffalo are some of the many celebrities who showed support for Page.

GLAAD Director of Transgender Media Nick Adams also expressed his respect to Page.

“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen, and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people,” the Director said.

“He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today.” He added.

Page’s break through into mainstream acting started with his lead role in the 2007 film Juno. With the film alone, Page bagged different nominations across the entertainment industry, including a nomination at the 2008 Oscars. The star continued being in the limelight as they took on roles in the X-Men franchise, Inception, Flatliners, and most recently in Netflix's successful series The Umbrella Academy.
