Tourism Should Benefit Local Communities
By Sharmaine De Guzman 30 Sep 2026 187

When people talk about successful tourism, they often look at how many visitors come, how many hotels are booked, and how much money is spent. But tourism should also benefit the locals who live in the places being visited.

The Philippine economy is highly dependent on tourism. A report from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) says that tourism directly contributed ₱2.27 trillion to the economy in 2025, or 8.1% of the country’s gross domestic product. Tourism-related industries also provided jobs to around 7.70 million people, or 15.7% of total employment.

These numbers show how important tourism is to the country. But they also make you ask, who benefits from the money that tourism brings?

Tourism can open more opportunities for locals to earn. Local guides, food vendors, farmers, artisans, hotel workers, and small business owners can all benefit from tourists. When visitors buy local products, eat at local businesses, or hire local services, their money can help support the community.

But it can also create problems when it grows without proper planning. More visitors can mean greater demand for water, energy, and other resources. PSA data showed that tourism used 208.74 million cubic meters of water in 2025. Its energy use also reached 7,532.16 kilotonnes of oil equivalent.

That’s why attracting more visitors should not be the only focus of development. The Department of Tourism has stressed the need for sustainable practices that create livelihood opportunities while protecting natural resources. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources also expressed the importance of protecting destinations while supporting the local communities.

Tourism should be more than just bringing people to a place. It should open opportunities for local businesses while protecting the resources and preserving the culture of communities to make the destination worth the visit.
