Aside from commemorating the lives of our late loved ones, Halloween season is when we also love to feel the shiver down our spine by watching lots of horror movies.
During our younger days, this is the time when we really enjoy to feel fears from monsters, ghosts, elementals, roaming spirits, haunted houses and such. For the ‘90s kids, this is the time we certainly anticipate every episode of Magandang Gabi Bayan Halloween Special.
And to bring back the horror that made us leave the lights open at night, here are some of the classic Filipino horror films that really gave us chills when we were a kid:
Feng Shui
SYNOPSIS: A woman, her loved ones, and her family’s lives become cursed and haunted as death follows them at every turn after acquiring a “bagua”
Who wouldn’t get scared after watching the movie Feng Shui? Just seeing the face of “Lotus Feet” brought us nightmares and haunted us for a long time. And this film is how Kris Aquino, was considered as the “Horror Queen” of Philippine Cinema. Feng Shui is also one of the timeless horror films as it still brings fear upon us all who still get to see it on TV until today. This is also the movie where Kris’s 'iconic scream' became famous.
Shake Rattle & Roll VIII "LRT"
SYNOPSIS: Thirteen passengers are trapped inside the abandoned LRT station. With no means of communication, they have no ways to call for help. Their night becomes worse as a mutant heart-eating eyeless monster pursuits them all and hunts them one by one.
Before ‘A Quiet Place’, there’s Shake Rattle & Roll VIII: "LRT" where the monster was also blind and sharp-eared. This episode of Shake Rattle & Roll VIII is really thrilling as the story convinces you at first that everything is normal and calm until the conflict of the story is introduced and the suspense begins to arise.
Halimaw sa Banga
SYNOPSIS: A story of an ancient jar that was used in a period to bury the dead. This particular jar was cursed as a witch was killed and buried in it. The witch pledged vengeance in her awakening, hence freeing her spirit gradually from the jar as it traps anyone inside who unluckily approaches it.
I personally think that Halimaw sa Banga really brought trauma to ‘90s kids including me. The face of the witch really haunted my childhood that my mother even used it to scare me if I don’t go to sleep for “siesta”. The acting of the monster in the jar adds up to the eeriness of the movie.
Shake Rattle & Roll III "Nanay"
SYNOPSIS: A group of friends decided to have a picnic and swim on the lake, where they found eggs and brought them home, which happened to be from an “Undin”, a monster sea creature living in the water. The horror starts when the Undin comes home with them and kills them one by one as she searches for her stolen eggs.
This episode of Shake Rattle & Roll is one of the iconic stories of the film series, because of the scary features of the sea creature, the casting, and story. Undin is still everyone’s one of the most favorite Shake Rattle & Roll monster until today.
Mag-ingat Ka Sa... Kulam
SYNOPSIS: After a car accident, a woman awakens with no memory. As she is regaining pieces of her memory with her husband and blind daughter, her business associate convinces her she had promised him to leave her husband before the accident. The woman is forced to confront her past and discover the real story.
Watching Mag-ingat Ka Sa... Kulam is one hell of a ride as it tricks the viewers that this film follows a very linear story or cliché, but as the story develops, the film will surprise you and make you say it’s not what you expected at first. Also, veteran actress Judy Ann Santos gave us an award-winning acting in this film.
Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara
SYNOPSIS: A woman sacrifices her love for her younger sister, and leaves them after getting married. Years later, she returns to look after her unstable niece as her sister killed herself out of jealousy. Strange events start taking place and the house seems to be haunted.
Written by Ricky Lee, Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara is expected to be one of the best Filipino films of all time. This film reminds us of how Filipino horror movies have evolved through the years. It is one of the respected traditional horror films in the country that you surely miss watching as you watch the recent ones.
Wag Kang Lilingon
SYNOPSIS: A nurse has been surrounded by strange and violent events while she is working in a hospital. Together with her boyfriend James, they try to catch the killer behind the rising number of deaths among the patients in the hospital.
Wag Kang Lilingon introduced a new way of storytelling of the horror genre and developing suspense in the Philippine cinema. Althought not in a linear approach which was a fresh treatment during its release, this film will feed you details piece by piece that will want you to crave for more. The unexpected revelations at the end also worked and executed well.
Shake Rattle & Roll "Class Picture"
SYNOPSIS: A group of students has an overnight in their school as they prepare for a school exhibit. The horror begins when the protagonist finds a century-old class picture.
Class Picture is one of the most successful episodes in Shake Rattle & Roll. It applies the elements and approach of a typical Asian horror flick — a curse, an item that objectifies the curse, and a tragic back story. I can say that it might have worked better as a full-length film.
Our childhood became more memorable and exciting because of this chilling horror films. So, what’s your favorite Filipino horror film/s? Share it with us! Happy Halloween!
