The youngest son of outgoing president Rodrigo Roa Duterte and ex-wife Elizabeth Zimmerman, Sebastian 'Baste' Duterte took his oath of office at the session hall of Sangguniang Panlungsod in Davao City on June 27 as the new Mayor. The inauguration was officiated by Associate Justice Loida Posadas-Kahulugan. Mayor Baste was accompanied on stage by his parents, partner Kate Necesario and his children, and the newly proclaimed Vice President of the Philippines Sara Duterte.
He will take over the position of his elder sister who has already finished her three-year term. Mayor Baste now becomes the third mayor in his family to become the head of Davao City and will continue the Duterte reign over the city for almost three decades.
In his speech, the 34 year old Mayor highlighted that the local government unit will prioritize delivering basic needs of the people and food security. In addition, generating jobs for the citizens of Davao City especially those who were affected by the pandemic will also be focused on. He also emphasized that businesses will continue to operate in the city as they were closely working with local and foreign investors.
"The city government will make sure businesses will continue to operate and job opportunities will be available and our citizens remain safe and healthy,” he said.
As the guest speaker, President Rodrigo Duterte congratulated his son and all the winning local candidates and reminded them to do their duties and responsibilities in Davao City and its citizens with 'confidence, honesty, and integrity.'
