Texas trends worldwide with over 1.51 million tweets. A gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults at an elementary school.
This Texas shooting is believed to be the deadliest since the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut in 2012 that killed 26 people, 20 of which were children 6 to 7 years old.
The shooting took place at Robb Elementary School, where grade schoolers in Uvalde were preparing to start their summer break. At least 1 teacher was among those killed, and several students were wounded.
Authorities identified the gunman to be an 18-year-old highschooler, Salvador Ramos from a nearby high school. Ramos reportedly shot his own grandmother before crashing a vehicle near the school, she is said to be in critical condition. School shooter Ramos was said to be armed with several weapons; he died at the scene as well.
Ramos is believed to have acted alone, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo said. Authorities have recovered an AR-15-style rifle and numerous magazines, said multiple law enforcement sources.
In 2021, the state of Texas passed a law that no longer requires people to have a licence to carry (LTC) in order to carry a handgun in most public places. Texans may need a Texas LTC if they want to carry their handgun in another state that requires a handgun and has a reciprocity agreement with Texas.
Heartbroken parents, families, and fellow Texans grieve the death of their young ones at the hands of those who were given power to hold such a deadly weapon. Other than grief, the netizens on social media are angry and disappointed.
Innocent students were studying, teachers were teaching. It was a normal day that’s been painted blood red.
