The world witnessed Taylor Swift grow from a sweet, innocent looking teenager who loved to sing country music about love and heartbreaks to a sophisticated lady who explored a different genre of music and is very vocal on her political thoughts. To most, she is still the goody two shoes type of girl who pleases everyone. But with the recently launched Taylor Swift: Miss Americana, she showed the world that she is more than just the musician we thought she was. Directed by Lana Williams, Miss Americana gave us a whole new perspective on what most celebrities go through; that they do have opinions that matters to our society, not just in show business.

The documentary started by narrating on how Taylor Swift started her career by performing in small events in the country side of the USA to making it huge by singing country music. In Miss Americana, she showed that being in the show business is not all about the glamour and the perks, that there’s this unnecessary pressure to look perfect all the time and very guarded movements just not to offend anyone. It’s a reminder that even the most successful ones in the industry are humans, just like us after all.

In spite of being considered as one of the top artists in the world today, Taylor Swift showed vulnerability. That while in the industry, she feels like she needs to get everyone’s approval to achieve the success she has always wanted. That she needs to keep her thoughts to herself just to avoid offending the people who has the power to help her reach her dreams. The day came when she realized that she lost her true self in the process which brought her to self-loathing but still wanting the approval of the people around her. This has been her wake-up call that she is more than the girl everyone thought she was. That she has ideas that matters and that even if she is an artist, she can still make a stand in politics, which she did despite all the warnings given to her by her team. Taylor Swift made a point that being a good girl does not mean saying yes all the time or not sharing your thoughts at all. She showed that every single thought matters, especially women’s who are often shut down in the society.

Miss Americana is a very refreshing documentary. It’s not just about Taylor Swift. It’s about making a stand against the inequalities in this society. It’s about getting out of the comfort blanket and make a difference even if it means getting the hate or to be humiliated in public. Taylor Swift showed that there’s more to life than looking pretty and getting the approval of others. That this mindset should be taken down and that we must build stronger thinking that no matter what your gender is, your thoughts matter and can make a difference in this world. And with this, Taylor Swift proved that she deserves your respect not just as a musician but as a human being, just like every man and woman in this world.
