Oh no, is this another social media misunderstanding?
On September 6, Filipina TikTok star Bella Poarch has become a trending topic on social after Korean netizens took notice of her left arm tattoo of the Rising Sun flag of Japan.
This flag is associated with Japanese imperialism, as well as Japan’s actions in World War II. Due to Imperial Japan’s treatment of Korea while under its colonial rule, the flag to this day remains offensive for Koreans.
Some Korean netizens have taken offense and explained why her tattoo heated debate as it rooted in the ‘dark’ part of the nation’s history.
Bella had apologized online after knowing the story, and firmly expressed her admiration to Korea. She clarified that she didn’t mean to hurt anyone. To correct the mistake, she even promised to have her ink removed.
“I will have the tattoo removed or do a cover-up. I did not know the history behind the tattoo and I will educate others about it,” the social media personality wrote.
Some Koreans expressed their intentions respectfully, while others blatantly attacked not just Bella with racial criticisms, but also Filipinos in general which led #CancelKorea to trend on Twitter Philippines today.
Filipinos being one of Hallyu's top fans in the world, and as much as they love K-pop, they have expressed their sentiments over the issue and stood up for our country and fellow Filipinos.
Here are some of the tweets about the sudden ‘discrimination’ from some Korean netizens, and yes, evidently, Pinoy humor takes the scene as some users posted comedic content.
ohh well as i remember... you koreans shouldn't exist rn. if my ancestors didn't sent these soldiers to help you. #cancelkorea #CancelToxicKoreans #ApologizeToFilipinos pic.twitter.com/KL4OQjHkJR

Philippines and Korea were both colonized by Japan in the past. These two nations also embraced the democratic form of government after the Second World War, and this is one of the similarities they have experienced in terms of political histories.
We hope that this issue might not trigger other huge things as we’ve been battling a health crisis.
What’s your reaction to this?
