Original creators of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ quit Netflix live-action Series!

“An Air Nomad knows when it’s time to cut their losses and move on.”

The original creators of one of the most popular animated series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will no longer be part of the much-awaited Netflix live-action series adaptation.

On August 12, DiMartino and Konietzko have issued separate statements on their social media accounts following their exit on the show due to creative differences.

“Many of you have been asking me for updates about the Avatar live-action Netflix series. I can finally tell you that I am no longer involved with the project. In June of this year, after two years of development work, Bryan Konietzko and I made the difficult decision to leave the production,” DiMartino said in an open letter to Avatar fans posted on his website.

In 2018, the series creators were hired as executive producers and showrunners for the Netflix adaptation and promised them to support their visions on retelling the story which made them excited for the opportunity then, but there was no follow-through on the truce.

“Look, things happen. Productions are challenging. Unforeseen events arise. Plans have to change. And when those things have happened at other points during my career, I try to be like an Air Nomad and adapt,” he continued,

DiMartino said he tried his best to "go with the flow," no matter what challenges arose. But, according to him, even an "Air Nomad knows when it's time to cut their losses and move on," one of the popular principles on the book.

He has sought wisdom from Stoic philosophers and concluded that he couldn't control the creative direction of the series, but he could control how he responded. So, he left the project, which he felt was necessary for his "happiness and creative integrity."

“And who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good. It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make,” the open letter reads.

DiMartino admitted that writing an open letter about his sudden departure from the live-action adaptation has left him with a very heavy heart.

Meanwhile, Bryan Konietzko shared his statement on Instagram story stating in an excerpt that the negative and unsupportive project environment is one of the reasons why they came up with a difficult decision of leaving the set,

For Bryan, he was profoundly disappointed with how things turned out about the plan, but on the latter, he optimistically hopes for the best of their team.

However, despite the exit of original creators, the Netflix project will still be pushing through with Nickelodeon and Dan Lin according to a report of Variety.com.

"We have complete respect and admiration for Michael and Bryan and the story that they created in the Avatar animated series," said a Netflix spokesperson. "Although they have chosen to depart the live-action project, we are confident in the creative team and their adaptation."
