By Norman Son Adriano 22 Jun 2022 308

A sweet victory for the NU Lady Bulldogs as they created history at the Game 2 of the Season 84 Women's Volleyball Finals.

After a 65 long years of championship drought, the team led by their team captain Cess Robles made a quick work after demolishing the DLSU Lady Spikers in 3 convincing straight set, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22 in front of more than 12,000 crowd at the Mall of Asia Arena on June 21. The Bulldogs did not drop a set in the 2 games of the finals and the entire season against their championship rival and only lost 5 sets in the entire course of the tournament.

During the first two sets of Game 2, Rookies Alyssa Solomon and Mhicaela Belen collaborated early on to contribute huge points to help their team inch closer to the crown. In the final set, La Salle pulled away early to give their team a chance to fight but fell short during the crucial moment. A service error from Thea Gagate ended the game and hailed NU the champions. Cess Robles was awarded as the Final MVP.

Before the final match, an awarding ceremony was held to recognize the individual athletes who made an impact and did a splendid job during the season. Rookie Mhicaela Belen was hailed as Rookie of the Year, 1st Best Outside Spiker and Season 84 MVP. Ateneo's ace Faith Nisperos bagged the 2nd Best Outside Spiker as she led her team to a 2nd runner up finish. DLSU's towering  Thea Gagate was awarded as the 1st Best Middle Blocker. Aside from Belen, the Lady Bulldogs grabbed all the awards this season, Camilla Lamina was awarded as Best Setter, Alyssa Solomom was Best Opposite Spiker, Sheena Toring bagged the 2nd Best Middle Blocker award and Jen Nierva is the Best Libero.

Regarded as a Super Team, players from the National University have been together since their highschool where they also won multiple championships and individual awards. Coming in the season, the team was highly anticipated to win the crown with their superb skills and undeniable talent. During the elimination, the Lady Bulldogs swept the round 14-0 and finished their campaign undefeated. Now that the season is over, they have etched their names in the history of UAAP.
