Newest transportation fare hike to commence this October
By Almira Louise Martinez 20 Sep 2022 652

Aside from the continuous increase of prices in the market, transportation fares will also rise this upcoming October. Commuters expect to tighten their belts and cut expenses to keep up with the fare hike.

Last Friday, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced the ₱1 provisional increase in the first four kilometers of travel in both traditional and modern jeepneys. On the other hand, for provincial and city buses, a ₱2 uniformed base fare hike for the first five kilometers and an increment of ₱0.35 to ₱0.50 for the next kilometers depending on its type. The flag-down rate of taxis and TNVS would also experience an additional ₱5 growth.

Due to the consecutive price surges, Filipinos and other organizations are airing their sentiments regarding this pressing issue. The public divides into different stands and opinions about this matter. Some drivers stated this development would assist with their daily needs and income. Meanwhile, other drivers also think that this hike is useless and won’t be of any help to both the drivers and commuters. "Pasahero naman ang mahihirapan, hindi naman kami. Kapag itinaas ang piso, boundary naman namin ang itataas. Huwag na lang itaas ang pamasahe, 'yung krudo na lang ang ibaba," Rizalino Manangkil, a Jeepney driver, said in an interview with GMA.

The LTFRB clarified that they recognize the struggles of our drivers because of the oil price hike; hence, they have raised the fare for public transportation. In addition, they have also consulted this decision with the National Economic and Development Authority and the Department of Energy.
