Killings everywhere, is the Philippines a safe place for journalists?
By Gen 05 Oct 2022 218

TW: Assasination, Killing.

One of the most famous radio commentators and a former broadcaster of  DWIZ 882 KHZ AM Percival Mabasa, also known as Percy Lapid was shot dead by two armed suspects at the subdivision's entrance in Las Piñas City while he was making his way to his online broadcasting, according to the reports from Las Piñas City Police.

Percy Lapid is a known critic of the Duterte and Marcos Jr. administrations. He hosted “ Lapid Fire '' where he often criticized the former president Rodrigo Duterte and Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the wrongdoings, abuses and irregularities within their governments.

September 30, Lapid’s last broadcast when he talked about red-tagging and its dangers in light of Judge Marlo Magdoza-criticism Malagar's by Lorraine Badoy Partosa, a former spokesman for the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

Lapid is the second journalist to die while President Marcos Jr. was in office, according to a count by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Rep. France Castro of the ACT Teachers party-list said that “ culture of impunity is worsening in the country”

The Committee to Protect Journalists, located in New York, warned in a new report that the Philippines among the nations is where journalists would be killed in retaliation.

Lapid is the third journalist to have died in the Philippines this year, according to data from UNESCO.

According to the global index of the New York-based media watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists, the Philippines was the eighth worst country in the world for unsolved journalist homicides as of 2021.

The murder demonstrates that journalism is still a risky industry in this nation. The fact that the crime occurred in Metro Manila demonstrates how brazen the offenders were and how the government has failed to protect journalists and ordinary citizens from harm.
