Is the New iPhone SE a Flagship Killer?
By AJ Virtuz 28 Apr 2020 1030

On April 15 this year, Apple announced the new iPhone SE, equipped with a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, Touch ID, features A13 Bionic which is the fastest chip in a Smartphone, and the best single-camera system in an iPhone which costs a starting price tag of $399, and is priced at P26,490 in the Philippines.

Before you consider purchasing one. There’s a question in your head that needs to be answered. “Is the new iPhone SE worth buying?”

And to answer your question, here’s what you need to know about the new iPhone SE:

Design

The new iPhone SE has the same design and size as the iPhone 8 which was released on September 2017 including its aerospace-grade aluminum and durable glass back. The phone comes in three colors which are black, white and (PRODUCT)RED.

The apple logo which used to be at the upper corner at the back of the phone is now centered. The face or front of the iPhone SE is black regardless of the color of the back.

So everyone might say that the iPhone SE looks old and you'd be right. But you're not going to buy the new iPhone SE with its new and revolutionary design, you buy it for its price tag. With $300 less than the iPhone 11 but offers the same internal feature, you might wanna think again.

Since the new iPhone SE has the same size as the iPhone 8 which is 4.7 inches, it is indeed smaller compared to other versions of the iPhone such as the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

A13 Bionic

This processor that's on the iPhone SE is the same processor that powers the flagship iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max.

So while it is appropriate to see the iPhone SE as Apple's budget or mid-range offering, unlike any budget or mid-range android phones, the processor that powers the new iPhone is worth it and top of the line. So if you are playing any stunning graphics games, the A13 bionic chip has enough raw power to handle this task.

Camera

iPhone SE also has the portrait mode just like the iPhone 11. On iPhone XR, Apple used a technology called 'Focus Pixels' to create a depth map that is used for portrait mode. While in the new iPhone SE, Apple says it harnesses the new neuro engine for real time machine learning. A process called Monocular Depth Estimation. So, the new iPhone SE has eight portrait lighting feature. (thanks to the A13 bionic chip), so even though the iPhone SE has the same camera design as the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 camera system has no portrait mode.

Although, some camera features did not make it on the new iPhone SE such as the "deep fusion" and the "night mode", so in low-light scenarios where night mode will automatically kick in on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the iPhone SE will not.

Touch ID

Although the touch ID makes the new iPhone look old and outdated, but SE's touch ID is faster and more accurate the old version.

Battery

The Iphone SE's bettery life can last a day on a single charge with average use.

The iPhone SE comes with a 5-watt charger, similar to the iPhone 11. A 30-minute charge will get you to 25%, 60 minutes to under 50 and in 90 minutes to 69%. While a full charge can take over over 2 hours. And with its aerospace-grade aluminum and durable glass back, iPhone SE does have a wireless charging.

Apple has regularly released PRODUCT(RED) variants of their phones, proceeds from which go to anti-HIV/AIDS programs. This time, some of the proceeds will also go to COVID-19 relief efforts, specifically to Switzerland-based Global Fund's COVID-19 response. Funding will go to "countries in need of PPE, diagnostics treatment, lab equipment, public safety communications, supply chain support, and more."

With $300 less than the iPhone 11 but offers the same internal feature as the other flagship iPhones, you might wanna think again.
