Famous Filipino Love Teams We Will Never Forget

Before KathNiel, LizQuen, or JaDine, the Philippine television and soap operas have been showcasing romantic-themed movies and shows ever since the Philippine cinema was born. With that, lots of love teams have been made whom Filipino viewers were so fond of watching even from the 1940s to 1960s. During the abrupt expansion of the local film industry in the country, after the world-war II, movie studios in the PH were newly established in the likes of Sampaguita and LVN pictures. And the romantic-themed movies and telenovelas are still being adapted to entertainment industry until now.

Now, let us relive the memories from the past love teams that we utterly fell in love with, and made us believe that their story could be our own.

Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa

Nida Blanca and Nestor de Villa were known as the dancing duo in the 1950s-1960s, who captivated many a hearts as they danced their way to fame. Nida at that time was said to be known as the Doris Day of the Philippine cinema because of her on-point comedic timing and dancing skills that was so popular and on trend. Nestor, on the other hand, was often referred to as the Fred Astaire of the Philippine cinema also for his acting and dancing skills. Their starred movies include Squatters (1953), and Waray-Waray (1954)

 

Susan Roces and Fernando Poe Jr.

Everyone knows that the "King of Philippine Movies" FPJ and one of the local movie industry's greatest and natural beauties Susan Roces, nicknamed "Ronnie and Susan" by their fans, ended up together. The love team amazed the audiences in films such as Langit at Lupa (1967), Magpakailan Man (1968), and Tanging Ikaw (1968). The onscreen couple eventually got married in 1968.

 

Sheryl Cruz and Romnick Sarmiento

Romnick Sarmiento and Sheryl Cruz were one of the hottest love teams during the 1980’s and 1990’s, Sheryl and Romnick’s on-screen tandem in the Wednesday Group of That’s Entertainment later on became an off-screen relationship. Though the love affair eventually ended, the duo made several hit movies together and ended up marrying different partners shortly afterwards.

 

Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion

Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion debuted as a love team in their movie Dear Heart (1981). They ruled the Philippine cinema during the 1980s. The couple then got married and eventually separated after having a daughter together (KC Concepcion) breaking the hearts of their fans with the sad news.

 

Aga Muhlach and Lea Salonga

Aga Muhlach and Lea Salonga were one of the biggest love teams of the 90s, being able to work together in movies such as “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal” (1992) and “Sana Maulit Muli” (1995). They were never a couple in real life, but fans really wished that they should have been.

 

Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin

The iconic 90’s love team Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin starred in the films like “FLAMES: The movie” (1997), “Labs Kita…Okey Ka Lang?” (1998), “Hey Babe!” (1999). In 2019, more than two decades since their last film together, ‘MarJo’ was reported to have a reunion project together, although details for the upcoming movie has not revealed yet.

 

Claudine Barreto and Rico Yan

The Claudine Barreto and Rico Yan love team were one the stars that shined through, and starred in one of ABS-CBN’s most successful soap operas of all-time, Mula Sa Puso, from 1997 to 1999. Their on-screen romance then became an off-screen relationship which ended with Rico’s tragic demise in 2002.

 

Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual

Juday and Piolo were first noticed in the 1997 TV series Esperanza, this on-screen couple had everyone wished to become a real-life couple. Though it didn’t seem like there was anything between them in real life. Their box office hit movies include Kahit Isang Saglit (2000), Jologs (2022), and Till There Was You (2003)

 

Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales

The Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales’ love team started in one of the Philippines’ most watched-soap opera in television history, Pangako Sa ‘Yo, which aired from 2000-2002. Also, Pangako Sa ‘Yo, is the Philippines’ most successfully distributed canned TV series worldwide. Tin and Echo became real life sweethearts and won the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Award as The Most Popular Love Team for two consecutive years.

 

Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz

John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo were hailed as one of the country’s most popular and successful love teams, thanks to their effective chemistry on-screen, Bea and John Lloyd have starred in box office hit films and award-winning teleseryes including their first telenovela “It Might Be You”(2003). They are best remembered and it’s considered as one of their milestone in showbiz with the phenomenal hit movie One More Chance (2007) as Basha and Popoy.

There may have been many different celebrity love teams through the years, but some of them will be loved and remembered forever even they have pursued their own respective life and career, separately.
