BTS becomes the first K-pop band to reach No. 1 in Billboard Hot 100

K-pop boy band BTS has become the first South Korean act to finally rule the top US singles chart ‘Billboard Hot 100’, as the music industry tracker Billboard announced on Tuesday, September 1, with their newly released English track ‘Dynamite’ debuting at number one, joining artists in the likes of Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, etc. to achieve the said milestone.

It is just another milestone for the 7-member boy band's global dominance, hours after BTS beat American multitalented artists including Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Taylor Swift to receive the Best Pop award at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

The first BTS single recorded completely in English, Dynamite was released in August 21 and tallied 33.9 million US streams in just a week, with 300,000 units sold. The music video also has set new YouTube record for the highest number of views in the first 24 hours of release, and currently has more than 260 million views, just a week after its release.

As the all-male K-pop group peaked the No. 1 spot, the song dethroned Cardi B's global hit "WAP" featuring fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion, which held number one for two consecutive weeks.

BTS's achievement comes just after it reached the Billboard Hot 100's 4th spot in March this year with their song "On."

Three of BTS' albums have hit number one on Billboard's 200 album charts, but this is their first Hot 100 top single. Billboard's all-genre Hot 100 compiles US streaming, radio airplay, and digital sales data to rank the top hits.

BTS is the first all-South Korean group —  composed of members J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, Rapmon, Suga, and Taehyung, to top the chart, after K-pop soloist Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ reached no. 2 in 2012.
