Tapped as the incoming head of the Department of Education, Vice President Sara Duterte is pressured by some groups to scrap and abolish the K-12 education system. The program which was implemented in 2011 by former president Benigno Aquino extended the country's academic years from 10 years to 12. This change in education aims to create more globally competent students.
However, VP Duterte already received instructions from incoming president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to review the K-12 program. She also mentioned that the abolition of it cannot be one just overnight.
"It cannot be decided overnight but initially it is something, napag-usapan namin ni President Marcos,” she said at a press briefing on June 20.
"He already gave instructions with regard to the review of the implementation of the K-12 program of the Department of Education,” she added.
Partylist's ACT Teacher and Kabataan find the implementation of K-12 'congested curriculum' as a failure. In the past years, these groups have been protesting to remove the program as it was a burden not only to the welfare of the students but also to their parents for the additional two years.
