Is the Disney's Baymax Show an LGTQIA+ ally?
By Norman Son Adriano 01 Jul 2022 594

'Baymax', the popular and well-loved nurse  robot from the hit movie Big Hero 6 is now streaming its spinoff series in Disney+.  The show tackles the daily life of Baymax in the city of Francisco as he helps the people in need. The show released its six episodes on June 29. On its release, Baymax  created a buzz  and questions online as it shows and promotes LGBTQ+ moments and ideas.

In a short clip from the episode, the fluffy robot Baymax is in a grocery store under the feminine hygiene aisle looking confused as he stares at the tampons and pad shelves. He then asked  a woman next to her about her recommended tampons, another woman butt in saying she prefer pads while a transgender man wearing a shirt with a trans flag on in says he prefer the pads with wings. This controversial scene drew flaks and backlash from some netizens including conservtive activist and writer, Christopher Rufo.

“Disney's upcoming show "Baymax," promotes the transgender flag and the idea that men can have periods to children as young as two years old. It's all part of Disney's plan to re-engineer the discourse around kids and sexuality,” he says.

Some furious parents took to Twitter their rage regarding the promotion of trans idea on the kid’s show platform,

“I am DONE with #Woke #Disney! My kids were watching the Baymax series (spinoff of Big Hero 6). Episode 2 was about a 12 year old girl getting her period at school and needing tampons. Episode 3 was about 2 guys going on a date. I stopped episode 3 and deleted the Disney+ app!đŸ€Ź”

However, some allies of the community found this episode to be an eye-opener, not only for inclusivity but also to normalize menstrations that others still see as taboo.

“It de-stigmatizes and normalizes periods, includes trans men, & de-sexualizes young kids who experience menarche,” a netizen with the username @runicrhyme firmly said.

“Baymax is a healthcare robot, Hiro lets Baymax do the thing he was made to do, help people, so naturally Baymax is helping a little girl that just got her first period at school. The trans guy has nothing to do with it, he's just there existing like all trans people,” @MationMiss said.
