President-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said on Monday, June 20 in a press conference that he will assume the office and be the head of the Department of Agriculture once taken his oath on June 30.
"As to agriculture, I think the problem is severe enough that I have decided to take on the portfolio of Secretary of Agriculture at least for now," he said.
"I thought it is important that the president take that portfolio so that not only to make it clear to everyone what a high priority we put on the agri sector but also as a practical matter so that things move quickly because the events of the global economy are moving very quickly," he added.
President-elect Marcos wants to focus on the 'severe' condition on the agricultural sector. Moreover, he also wants to restructure some of the sub agencies such as the
National Food Authority (NFA) and the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) to maximize and utilize its full potential.
"Many of the agencies have changed their functions over the years. We have to restructure the actual department to be more responsive to the global situation," he said.
It can be remembered that Marcos Sr., the late dictator, appointed himself as chief of the agricultural department during his administration.
According to Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion, President-elect Marcos as a head of DA is a 'natural choice'. Considering that his father created several programs that he can continue once seated in the Palace.
"There are many programs that his father started that I believe can be revived and will redound to benefits for the country’s agriculture sector. Masagana 99, the Food Terminal Inc. and the Kadiwa stores are only a few of the projects that I believe can be revisited today,” he emphasized.
