Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in partnership with Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) ensures that the security features of Philippine Identification Card (PhilID) is able to protect citizen’s information against identification or counterfeiting theft.
It is designed to covert and overt physical and digital security elements. Moreover, it has QR code with selected demographic information for digital transactions and offline verification of identity purposes. PSA said that, “PhilID will soon roll out a website and offline mechanisms to enable relying parties such as government agencies and financial service providers to verify, using public-private key cryptography, the digital signature in the QR code to confirm that the demographic information is accurate and has not been tampered. “ The same QR code will also be useful for the electronic version of PhilID—a mobile application.
According to PSA, PhilID contains on its front face a 16-digit PhilSys Card Number (PCN), which serves as a unique identity number that must be accepted by public and private institutions for authentication purposes of the PhilID. The PCN is a derivative of the permanent 12-digit PhilSys Number (PSN), which is microprinted on the back of the PhilID and provided on the letter that accompanies delivery of the PhilID.
To complete its security features and uniqueness among other government issued IDs, the placement of PCN and PSN on the PhilID is in accordance to the core principle of privacy-by-design. Having that said, it reduces the opportunities for the PSNs to be compromised, resulting in lower risks of privacy breaches and identity theft. Filipinos are therefore advised to be cautious in disclosing and using their PSN in any transactions.
Rest assured that PhilID will serve not just for an easier transaction but will also be a secured console of a Filipino’s identification.
