COVID-19: Philippines’ 3rd Leading Cause of Death
By Faith Estrella 18 Jan 2022 677

On the third loop of pandemic surge, Philippine Statistics Authority’s data (PSA) shows that COVID-19 is now the 3rd leading cause of death in Philippine history.

From January to October 2021, the death toll reached 604, 329. On this rate, 75, 285 were due to COVID-19 and that is about 12.5 percent of the total. On the other hand, the Department of Health (DOH) showed a recorded data of about 33, 796 deaths only. The discrepancy primarily is based on the description written in death certificates certified by local health officers, according to PSA.

Among all regions, the National Capital Region (NCR) leads the highest rate of death caused by COVID-19. A total of 18, 044 (24% of the total number) from NCR and followed by CALABARZON (22.1%) and Central Luzon (18.9%). Meanwhile, the active cases recorded as of January 17, 2021 jumped up to 290, 938 since 37,070 cases were added. Meanwhile, heart attack is still the number one cause of death in the country.

In line with the above data, DOH continually clarifies that the Omicron variant is way more severe, deadly and fast transmitted. They encourage Filipinos to get their booster (for those who are fully vaccinated) and be vaccinated as soon as possible (for those who haven’t taken it yet).

Also, DOH says that both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals can transmit the virus. Hence, everyone must continually comply with minimum public health standards.
