Could Omicron XE lead PH into its third year of lockdown?
By Krisia Mae Dulce and Hannah Touchette 07 Apr 2022 543

It’s been quite a while since COVID-19 had its spotlight on various media and news platforms. Knowing that a lot of individuals are starting to have their doses of vaccines and booster shots, they are confident and assured that they won’t be getting the virus anymore. And if they catch it, they are certain they won’t be having the worst symptoms.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) approved to lower the alert in Metro Manila and in different regions to Level 1 on March 1 after the infection rate had subsided since the surge in January. Ever since, people started going out now that a lot of malls and restaurants have reopened and let their customers be in their stores in full capacity than before. Travel flights were also allowed since travel restrictions were eased.

Beach trips here and then, out-of-the-country family vacations, hanging out on different aesthetic cafés, and a whole lot more - these things have been a breather as it is also a way to destress from academics and work-related matters.

Just when we thought that the country is getting back to normal as COVID-19 cases have alleviated along with the other countries around the world, a new variant was detected.

In Bangkok, Thailand, a new variant was detected which happened to be their country’s first case. It is said to be more transmissible than the latest deadly Omicron variant according to the Department of Health (DOH). It is known as the “Omicron XE”, which, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a mutant of the sub-variants of Omicron BA.1 and BA.2. It is reported as a continuous monitoring case as its severity is still being investigated.

This brings alarm to the country since Thailand is one of the Philippine’s ASEAN neighbors. Everyone is highly advised to get vaccinated and boosted by the DOH.

Will this disclosure make future lockdowns and waves of quarantine for the country possible again? Is the government already prepared for another variant of the virus? Nonetheless, people should do their part to be a responsible individual and should always take extra precautions so that history won’t repeat itself.
