In an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel on Friday, the Department of Health (DOH) says a different vaccine brand for your 2nd booster shot will be more effective in combating COVID-19.
“A different brand will be more effective because it tries to give additional protection outside of the regular or the homologous primary booster,” says Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje, the head of the National Vaccination Operations Center. This is drawn from the recommendations of the government’s vaccine expert panel.
In Thursday's Laging Handa briefing, vaccine expert panel chairperson Dr. Nina Gloriani, referenced research indicating that heterologous boosters - or various types - provide better disease protection.
Using a different vaccination brand as a second booster dose, however, is merely a suggestion for now, according to Cabotaje. She added that they are just finalizing guidelines to get consensus on—number one, that heterologous booster, age group, and the final decision of what qualifies as immunocompromised.
Gloriani also announced on Thursday that the second booster shot for eligible groups is ready for rollout upon the approval by Health Secretary Francisco Duque.
As of now, COVID-19 vaccine has been completed by over 67 million people. However, out of the total, only 12.7 million people have received booster shots.
